Disciple Indeed: The Title Given to a Diligent Seeker of God

DISCIPLE, noun [Latin , to learn.]

faith comes by hearing

1. A learner; a scholar; one who receives or professes to receive instruction from another; as the disciples of Plato.

2. A follower; an adherent to the doctrines of another. Hence the constant attendants of Christ were called his disciples; and hence all Christians are called his disciples, as they profess to learn and receive his doctrines and precepts. (Noah Webster 1812 Dictionary of English Language).

Disciples come in two forms. Those who are referred to as disciples “indeed”, and those who casually follow Christ.

The key characteristic of the first type of disciple is someone who is tenacious in their pursuit of Christ. They won’t let go of God’s Word no matter what battles they face in life.

John 8:31-32 says: Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. King James Version (KJV).

Notice, those who Jesus was speaking to already believed on Him. But He revealed a deeper level of discipleship. Those who continue in His Word become disciples indeed (or truly, fully).

The fruit of continuing in His Word, and becoming a disciple indeed is knowing the truth, which in turn will make you free.

I’d like to encourage you today to grab ahold of the Word of God for the last time. Take hold of it and never let it go.
